On sight, you can tell that they were made by someone, even if it might not be clear that they were gnawed at by beavers. The forms resemble man-made sculpture. But, are they sculpture?
Chewing on wood is a natural trait for beavers. I set up some wooden blocks in their living space, and then collected the wood after it had been chewed at. One observes many shapes that look like the human body. This would seem to be the result of the beavers chewing around hard knots in the wood. If that is right, could one say that it is actually the wood itself creating these forms? What should we see as the subject (creator) in this activity, who or what is the subject here?
Later on, it was discovered that longhorn beetles were living in them while they were boxed for storage. CT scans revealed complex internal tunnels that the beetles had been boring into them over a period of several years.
